Your household’s share of the national debt
The national debt, this fiscal year’s interest bill and the daily growth, divided out for the number of people in your household.
1 to 10 people
At the current pace your share grows $25.88 per day.
Divided by a US population of 341,784,857 (2025) and multiplied by 1 person. Nobody is billed for this share — it is a way to picture the size of the total.

How this calculator works
Each figure is a national total divided by the US population and multiplied by your household size. The debt is total public debt outstanding from the Treasury’s Debt to the Penny for September 17, 2026. Interest is the fiscal year-to-date interest expense on Treasury securities (FY 2026, through August 31, 2026). Daily growth is the average change over the last 90 days of Treasury data. Population is the World Bank estimate for 2025.
The figures come from this site’s last data build, not a live feed, so they can be a few days behind the live clock. For all four ways of dividing the debt — per citizen, taxpayer, household and worker — see debt per person. For what the interest buys and how it compares, see interest on the national debt, and for the rate that drives it, the federal funds rate.
Common questions
What is my share of the national debt?
The Treasury reported total public debt of $40,093,343,468,151 for September 17, 2026. Divided by 341,784,857 people (2025), that is $117,306 per person, or $469,223 for a household of four.
Do I actually owe this money?
No. The debt is owed by the federal government, not by individuals, and no one is billed a share. The per-person figure is a way to picture the size of the total and the claim it puts on future federal revenue.
How much interest is paid on my share?
Interest on the debt came to $1,267,805,144,581 in FY 2026, through August 31, 2026, or $3,709 per person. That money is paid from federal revenue before any other program is funded.
How fast does my share grow?
Measured over the last 90 days of Treasury data, the debt grew by about $8,846,110,899 a day — $25.88 per person. The rate changes with tax receipts, spending and the timing of debt issuance.
