How we make money

Short version: at the moment this site earns nothing. It is paid for by its operator. This page explains how that is planned to change, and the rules that apply when it does.

Today

NationalDebtFacts shows no advertising, has no sponsors, contains no affiliate links and charges nothing. Running it costs little, because it is a set of static pages fetched from official sources, but the time that goes into it is real.

Advertising

The site is planned to be funded by display advertising from Google AdSense, once the site is approved. Ads will be supplied and selected by Google, not by us, and will be clearly distinguishable from the site’s own content. Advertising code is loaded only after you agree to it; if you decline, you see no ads and every figure remains available. The details are in the privacy policy.

Advertisers do not choose, see or approve content before it is published, and no figure, headline or news item is sponsored.

Affiliate links

In future the site may include affiliate links — for example to savings accounts or Treasury products, where they fit a page about interest rates. If a visitor opens an account through such a link, the site may receive a commission. If and when that happens, these rules apply:

  • Affiliate links are labelled as such where they appear.
  • A commission never changes a figure, a chart or a news item. Official data is shown the same way whether or not anyone pays.
  • Any comparison or ranking follows criteria published on the same page.
  • Paid placement, if it is ever offered, is labelled as paid.

The newsletter

The newsletter is free. Subscriber email addresses are used to send it and are never sold or rented. Any future advertising or affiliate content in the newsletter follows the same labelling rules as the site.

What we do not do

  • We do not sell data about visitors. We do not have a database of visitors to sell.
  • We do not accept payment to publish, change or remove a figure or a news item.
  • We do not accept payment from political parties, campaigns or government bodies for content.
  • We do not publish sponsored articles presented as editorial content.

When this page changes

This page is updated whenever a source of income is added or removed, so it describes the site as it actually is. How content is produced regardless of funding is set out in the editorial policy.
