Legal
Terms of Use
By using NationalDebtFacts you accept these terms. If you do not, please do not use the site.
Informational use only
Everything here is for general information. Nothing on this site is financial, investment, tax or legal advice, and nothing should be relied on for any transaction. Speak to a qualified professional before making financial decisions.
Accuracy
Figures are drawn from public sources believed to be reliable, and the methodology is documented in full. Even so, data may be delayed, incomplete or wrong, and the live debt figure is explicitly an estimate between official Treasury publications.
No warranty is given as to accuracy, completeness or fitness for any purpose. Anyone citing an exact debt figure should use the Treasury’s published number and its reporting date, both of which are shown on the front page.
Third-party data
Live figures are fetched by your browser directly from third-party providers. We do not control those services and are not responsible for their availability, accuracy or terms.
The news page links to official releases and, under “In the press”, to articles by other publishers. Those headlines are found automatically by topic, belong to their publishers and are shown only as a link with the outlet’s name. We do not review, summarise or endorse linked articles and are not responsible for their content.
Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss arising from use of this site or reliance on anything published here. The site is provided "as is" and may change or become unavailable at any time.
Intellectual property
The underlying government data is public domain and free to use. The written explanations, design and code of this site are its own work. The JSON data files are offered freely for reuse; a link back is appreciated but not required.
No affiliation
This site is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the US government, the Department of the Treasury, the Federal Reserve System or any Federal Reserve Bank, or usdebtclock.org. Data from public sources is credited where it is used, in the form those publishers require; crediting a source does not imply that the source endorses this site. All trademarks belong to their respective owners.
Data from other publishers
Figures from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York are used under its Terms of Use at newyorkfed.org, and household debt statistics are credited as New York Fed Consumer Credit Panel / Equifax. Where you reuse those figures from this site, the same terms and attribution requirements apply to you. Data from US federal agencies — the Treasury, IRS, Census Bureau, Bureau of Economic Analysis, Bureau of Labor Statistics and USAspending.gov — is in the public domain, as are releases of the Federal Reserve Board, the Congressional Budget Office and the Government Accountability Office quoted on the news page. Press headlines are located through the GDELT Project (gdeltproject.org).
