The lightest loads in the data are Macao ($0), Afghanistan ($144), DR Congo ($704), Burundi ($788), Tuvalu ($836). A small figure is not automatically good news: it can mean a government that cannot borrow rather than one that chooses not to.

How this calculator works
Each country’s general government gross debt is divided by its population, both from the IMF World Economic Outlook for 2025, and multiplied by your household size. Debt is converted to US dollars at market exchange rates, which is why a currency move changes the dollar figure even when nothing changed at home.
Debt per person and debt to GDP measure different things and rank countries differently. Both are shown for every country in the table.
Common questions
What is my share of the national debt in other countries?
For a household of four, $445,996 in the United States, $152,064 in Germany and $297,140 in Japan. The figures divide each country's general government gross debt by its population, converted to US dollars at market exchange rates.
Which country has the highest debt per person?
Singapore, at $170,220 per person, which is 171.3% of its GDP. Debt per person and debt to GDP do not rank countries in the same order: a rich country can carry a large amount per head at a modest share of its economy.
Does a low figure mean a country is better run?
Not on its own. The lightest figure here is Macao at $0 per person. A small debt can mean a government that spends within its means — or one that cannot borrow at all, because it has defaulted before or has no bond market to borrow in.
Would moving abroad actually change what I owe?
No. Nobody is personally liable for government debt. The figure is a way of putting an abstract number on a human scale — what the debt amounts to per head — not a bill anyone receives. What does travel with you is the tax system that has to service it.
